Basme (backpack) with one of her sisters and a cousin.
Her father is a mechanic, her mother a housewife.
Last October, her father was kidnapped by an unidentified armed group – unfortunately a practice which is now occurring more and more in Syria. As a result, it has taken more than two months for Basme’s family to raise the ransom money demanded (200,000 SYP/2,600CHF/2,100 €).
During this time the family has been under intense stress, having to sell all their possessions, borrow from neighbours and their family.
Basme’s father has now returned home after having had to spend some time in hospital recovering due to the harsh treatment he endured while in captivity. But now the family has nothing left, not even enough food to eat.
Basme has two young sisters, the younger still needing to be breastfed by her mother but, as the mother explains, under the current conditions she cannot even produce enough milk to feed her.
